The definitive battle of the sexes springs to life in this Tony Award-nominated classic by Christopher Hampton, directed by the acclaimed Rufus Norris. For long-time friends and occasional lovers Vicomte de Valmont and Marquise de Merteuil, love is simply a game of chess. But in a few false moves, they find themselves locked in the ultimate checkmate. Filled with seduction, betrayal, and plenty of illicit passion, this dark comedy paints the pre-Revolutionary French aristocracy in all its decadence. Cast & Characters
Image Library Reviews Broadway debutante Mamie Gummer rings the bell as Cécile, the soon-to-be-formerly-innocent convent girl who learns from Valmont that sex is ever so much more fun than good works. She plays her part with the same spunk and wit she brought to "Hunting and Gathering" earlier this season. Ms. Gummer has big things ahead of her. Mamie Gummer, so compelling in a variety of recent showcases, reduces Cecile, the convent virgin with the wild streak, into an obnoxious cutie-pie Valley Girl. Mamie Gummer is drolly adorable as Cecile, the virginal but curious teenager who becomes part of a scheme to avenge another of the Marquise's exes. Related Links | ||||||
