Sinatra

Developed by Tina Sinatra and approved by Frank himself, Sinatra is a made-for-television mini-series following the life and times of Frank Sinatra, one of the most popular and acclaimed singers of the 20th century. Opening with his childhood in Hoboken, New Jersey, the film follows Sinatra's (Philip Casnoff) rise to the top in the '40s, through the dark days of the early '50s and his triumphant re-emergence in the mid-'50s, to his status as pop culture icon in the '60s, '70s and '80s. In between, the film hits all of the main events, including his three marriages, his connections with the Mafia and his notorious friendship with the Rat Pack.

Behind the Story

When it was first offered to Marcia, she very nearly turned down the role of Ava Gardner. "I couldn't exactly see myself playing the most beautiful woman in the world," she said in an interview with the New York Times in November 1992. "They ended up doing a lot of makeup work on me, darkening the eyebrows, shading the nose, styling the hair. And the costumes were fabulous. For me, it became a matter of finding her essence - that raw, gutsy power she had. "It made perfect sense to me that she wanted out of America and ran off to live in Spain. She was very European in a way. In Europe, you can have these big gestures. You can throw your head back and let out a big, bawdy laugh. We are so much more puritanical in this country. I admit, sometimes I thought, 'Oh, Marcia, this is just extraordinarily bad acting on your part - all this breathy, nostril-flaring stuff you're doing.' But at times I really got caught up in her and the story and believed it all." By way of researching the role, she watched several of Ms. Gardner's films, her favorite being "On the Beach," and read the star's autobiography and Kitty Kelley's biography of Mr. Sinatra. "Ava was the love of Frank's life," she said. "and they went over the top with each other - you know, shooting up lampposts in Palm Springs, that sort of thing. They fought so much, they eventually fought their way out of love."
